024 - Presumably Surplus from the War of 1812
I realized that, in the clearer pictures, some of the printing was readable. Looks like it used to hold... 75mm howitzer blanks? Wow. Looks like it says M1A1 on the side - these days that's a tank - but apparently that was once a designation for a variant of the M116 howitzer that was used in WW II. I reckon whoever made that box would be surprised, and hopefully pleased, to see the use it's put to today. Later, it crossed my mind that perhaps the cannon the Aggies fire at football games is a 75mm howitzer. It looks about that size. That could be the origin of this box.
