In the beginning we looked at small indicator lights, like these, as well as LEDs. I bought a super-bright white LED, but accidentally fried it after a few minutes testing. It went out with quite a flash. Later I bought a red one (much cheaper) and tested with it. I liked the look of these indicator lights, but they use over ten times as much power as an LED for about the same light output. Since our power budget was limited, we went with the LEDs.
