I believe it was during this photo session that I figured out a new technique for shooting bees. Don't let the camera auto-focus, which takes several seconds and, in macro mode, is wrong as often as not. Instead, switch to manual focus mode and set the focus two or three inches in front of the lens. Then chase the bees around, moving the camera to get a crisp focus. It's quick and easy and much more successful than letting the camera select the focus. And don't be nervous around honeybees. Of course they can sting, but they really are very sweet creatures that are not prone to violence. Not like wasps, which will sting just for the hell of it.
