Dan found the snake behind a bench on the front porch. I think it was a young one, perhaps a couple feet long, though we never saw it straight. Lizzie wanted to keep it, but it escaped under the house. I've been trying to figure out what kind it is. The pattern resembles those of rat snakes, but I must say there are also some copperheads with a similar pattern.

Update: I think it's a rat snake -- compare to http://www.kentuckysnakes.org/largeimage.cfm?snake_number=33&option=non-posionous. Looks very similar.
